Firm News

We are pleased to announce that former National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) Attorney Liz Cortez has joined the firm as partner in our Labor & Employment Service Group based in Chicago. Liz’s arrival reflects the firm’s recent momentum in welcoming former federal government attorneys across multiple practice areas, bringing valuable firsthand perspective on regulatory and enforcement matters.

Liz comes to us after spending more than two decades at the NLRB as a senior trial attorney, where she litigated and resolved hundreds of cases involving unfair labor practices, collective bargaining, and disciplinary disputes. Serving the agency, she gained a comprehensive understanding of how the NLRB investigates, prosecutes, and litigates unfair labor practice claims. Liz now applies that insight to her employer-side practice.

Liz focuses on counseling businesses on the full spectrum of issues arising out of employment, with an emphasis on helping employers navigate compliance challenges and stay ahead of regulatory developments. She is a skilled strategist, negotiator, and litigator with experience advising employers across diverse fields, including health care, retail, manufacturing, construction, and logistics.

“Liz’s extensive NLRB experience makes her exactly the kind of attorney employers need advising them right now. She knows the system from the inside out and can offer strategic insight to management in addition to handling critical labor issues in a timely and effective manner,” said Jeff Risch, co-chair of the Labor & Employment Service Group. “Combined with our existing bench, her background makes us one of the most formidable and unmatched labor and employment teams advising employers today.”

Liz earned her J.D. from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law and her B.A. from the University of Illinois Chicago.

We are proud to welcome Liz to the firm and look forward to the leadership and insight she brings to our Labor & Employment team.
