To celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, ABC7 Chicago presents "Asian Influences: Standing Strong," hosted by Judy Hsu. This edition details stories of Asian American during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gary Zhao, President of Chicago's Asian American Bar Association, discusses the need to support Asian Americans given the recent rise in hate crimes. He shares how some misguided beliefs of the COVID-19 pandemic have affected him and his family personally and what he has seen within the Asian American community. When Gary and other local organizations called on leaders to speak out, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx both condemned the acts against Asian Americans, and are featured in the show.
